So, when kernel 2.6.31-20-generic was first installed, it failed to load, freezing at usplash, just like every other since ~14. However, I re-try new kernels on free days, and the past two days, this newest kernel is loading properly.
I do not expect this to last, however. They all work randomly, and/or for a short period.
