I think I know what's going on here: nm-applet tries to display a status
indication ("Wired network connection 'Auto eth0' active"), to the right
of the mouse pointer, but there is too little space to show it. If I
move the mouse away briefly and back again, the same status message is
displayed below the mouse pointer, and all is well. Also, if I unplug
the network cable I get a short status indication which does fit, there
