I've seen a very similar (most likely the same root cause) problem. I think the key is the high load, low CPU, and extreme unresponsiveness. My guess is that the system is waiting for disk resources, and queueing up on the CPU. Any suggestions on what information to gather to test that hypothesis would be appreciated.
I'm running 64 bit Ubuntu 8.10, 2.6.27-17-generic, reiserfs with software raid 1. My box exports file system mounts through both NFS and Samba.
