For people who are using KDE and have bad/disappearing fonts in certain GTK applications such as Gaim, Gnucash, and GIMP, here's a workaround:
In KDE's Control Center, Appearance & Themes, Fonts, Anti-Aliasing, make sure that "Use sub-pixel hinting" is checked. Under Appearance & Themes, GTK Styles and Fonts, make sure "Use my KDE fonts in GTK applications" is checked.
