In Karmic, the physical volume control worked after installation with no
tweak required. The volume is now at a good enough volume to be passable
(i.e. watch a movie without headphones). It is certainly not as loud as it
would be under Windows with the same hardware but I have learned that when
something is good enough in Linux you take what you can get. TBH I probably
won't risk 10.04 until at least 6 weeks have passed after the official
release given the number of headaches that Koala came with.
