Well I have a 1005HA that was experiencing the Skype microphone problems as well, but now it's working beautifully. I tried the suggestions above:
1. sudo apt-get Install linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic 2. sudo apt-get install pavmeter 3. sudo pavucontrol, unlocked the channels and set a one channel to base and the other to max, then locked them again 4. The Skype test call works beautifully when testing microphone playback!
