Did a fresh install with the -14 kernel (I think Alpha3, but may have
done updates before when I was testing), then did dist-upgrade.  It's
working.  I'm still curious about this issue, but don't have time to
figure out what caused it.

I tried installing the .33 kernel from the mainline .deb and that fixed
nothing.  There seemed to be something flaky with crypt_setup as I was
never getting prompted for a password, except with the older kernels.
It went from bad to worse in the process of trying to fix it (I think
the -10 kernel was the only one working at the end), but I did a hard
disk check and it passed, so *shrugs shoulders*.
