Public bug reported:

Strange problem, it seems either sound card (pulse) and/or mainboard
and/or nvidia/Xorg are causing hangs.

The sound is distorted always, after recent kernel upgrade, now at
2.6.31-20-generic

Then I tried to kill pulseaudio of my user and then start it.
Then I re-logged in to my user, no change with audio - still distorted strongly.
Then I re-logged again, and then the login screen splash (the gdm splash -
brown) started flickering and computer was unresponsive.

sysRq+SUB did not reboot the machine, I had to user power button on PC.
