Really we need the Xorg.0.log from when you're experiencing the bug - namely, when you have that modeline defined in your xorg.conf.
I understand that you can't use the GUI while it's in that state, but it would be very helpful if you could boot the computer to this broken state, switch to a VT (using Ctrl+Alt+F1), log in, and run DISPLAY=:0 apport-cli -u 538275 and say “no” when it asks if you want to attach the gdm log files (otherwise, apport will ask for your password in X, which you can't see). If that fails, could you run cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log ~/xorg.0.log-broken dmesg > ~/dmesg-broken DISPLAY=:0 xrandr -q > ~/xrandr-broken and then attach the three files xorg.0.log-broken, dmesg-broken and xrandr-broken in your home directory to this bug?
