I can confirm, that the problem of non-muting speakers is resolved installing the linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.31-20-generic from the backports repository on my vostro 1015.
However on my computer, the quality of recorded sound (no matter internal or external mic) is terrible. It sounds like the mic is in saturation but I set all levels to the lowest non-zero value.
