I had this trying to move from the propietary nvidia to nouveau.

First, you need to remove or otherwise corrupt /etc/X11/xorg.conf (mv
/etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup)

When you boot, it'll go to the "X not working" screen instead of
starting gdm. You can now switch to TTY1, log in, and install nvidia-
current.

Your system should now boot, possibly using the nouveau driver.
