Correction, when I boot with the external monitor, the desktop actually
appears across both the laptop and the monitor. If I unplug the monitor
and plug it again, the monitor still works but only if I booted with it.

Another correction, when I boot without the external monitor and then
connect it after booting, running the Monitors application seems to
create a desktop across both the laptop and the monitor, as observed by
moving the mouse to the right of the laptop, but nothing actually
appears on the monitor.
