You are right, I did try and install a newer version of the client. Sorry I 
thought removing the package and the repo would get rid of all the files - or I 
would have mentioned it. Anyway, after running the you gave me command you gave 
me after hanging for about 2 mins I get:
$ u1sdtool -q
ubuntuone-syncdaemon still running.
Nevertheless I removed the old meta data and restarted. The ubuntu one client 
launched on start up (by that i mean the icon in the panel) but it gave an 
error in the Notify OSD bubble that said I have a capabilities mismatch and 
that I am running a newer client than the server. I guess this is because the 
old data wasn't fully removed because  u1sdtool --quit didnt work? Ive attached 
the files you requested.
