I am currently unable to recreate this and threaded messages are
displaying properly for me. I have locales version 2.11+git20100304-1
installed and my locale settings are:

LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8"

LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8"

LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=
