Bit more investigation shows that the log out icon is there when the panel is on the left, it's just that it's to the right of the user icon and so is only displayed if the panel is wide enough. By default it will fall off the edge of the panel.
I would have expected the user and logout icons to be independent of each other, or at least for them to be placed vertically on top of one another when the panel is vertical. It looks like a similar problem affects the volume and mail icons. When the panel is on the left only the volume icon can be seen. Have changed the package the bug refers to from gnome-panel to indicator-applet. ** Package changed: gnome-panel (Ubuntu) => indicator-applet (Ubuntu) -- Power (log out) icon is lost when top panel orientation is changed to Left or Right https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/542276 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
