Ok, here are my apport results. The reproduction is as usual : boot from Live CD and do some read-write activity on a disk connected to Promise IDE controller. I run fsck on the Linux partition, for example. The kernel very soon puts the controller into PIO4 mode, after which its performance unacceptably degrades. No fatal hangs this time, however. But it worked much better with 2.6.24 and older Promise driver, anyway .
