Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

Since the recent versions of Thunderbird break compatibility quite frequent
it's no longer possible for a normal user (or even an experienced one) to know
how to get a working add on.
For example the Lightning version in the lucid repo is ancient so the user has
to manually install the addon. The link to the web pages are then bogus since
there is no Lightning build for stable Thunderbird and 64 bit arch. Similar
problems are present when trying to get GData plugin to install.
Overall the addon system leaves the user totally lost which taken the version
incompatabilities into account is just bad. When the abi/interfaces are not
kept stable at least an addon tool should be present which then can workout the
dependencies for the user.
