Tried sudo aptitude -q update and sudo aptitude -q safe-upgrade. No luck, still fails to configure.
Installed in another partition Lucid Beta 1 which does require the -q option. It does not get this problem of failing to configure. Somehow the update-upgrade path does not result in the same as the Beta 1 fresh install.
