I'm running Karmic currently, and have youtube videos playing through
PulseAudio.

>When I say "properly configure alsa drivers" I mean (with Karmic Koala):
> 1. Installing latest alsa drivers
> 2. Letting alsa recognize my audio card (adding proper option in alsa
> configuration file)
> 3. Using Alsaconf to properly choose hda-intel audio card

You're likely doing something wrong here. You shouldn't have to do any of those
things, and they're likely to mess up other things, like the problem you're
describing.
If you want to upgrade your sound drivers, try this:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems/KarmicCaveats#Sound%20drivers%20need%20to%20be%20updated
(you can try both linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic and the
ubuntu-audio-dev PPA).

I'm marking this bug as invalid for now since you're likely using alsa
drivers we don't support.

** Changed in: alsa-driver (Ubuntu)
