Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 9.04, Linux 2.6.28-18-generic, GNOME 2.26.1, trying to switch
users causes the system to report "Cannot start new display\nThe X server
failed. Perhaps it is not configured well." and the logout ceases, leaving the
current session running. Apparently this message comes from Gnome. Gnome's
policy report is
gnome:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1:2.22.2~4ubuntu6
  Version table:
     1:2.22.2~4ubuntu6 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/universe Packages

I expected the session to end, and to be presented with a new login
prompt. What actually happened was that a small window reported that
the X server failed and the old session remained active.

I also tried
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
and found that it
produced about a dozen lines of output in "glass teletype" format, the
last line of which related to checking battery state. (This system is a
desktop.) Then the system just waited for input; I finally tried a few
keystrokes which it echoed back but did not act upon. I finally used a
hard reset to get going again.

I am running Compiz with extra effects enabled.

This bug appears to be identical to bug #280216.
