After a lot of testing I found that the problem occurred only when connecting with WPA2. I changed my wireless security to connect through WPA and the connection is working fine with the latest drivers.I've tried playing a bit with wpa_supplicant but to no avail. So it seems like it's a bug with WPA2 only. Another option is some problem with my wireless router (a BT HomeHub 2, which is pretty common here in the UK. I have no problems at all with the connection on my Windows computers.
