I swore I typed "impossible" when I entered this problem.  Oh, well.

This problem does not only affect me.  There are lots of incidents
reported in October and November where the Ubuntu installer did not work
properly.  I would boot and then stare at a black screen
indefinitely.... unless I put a LiveCD in and booted the hard drive from
that.  You would think such a basic problem would have been fixed by
now.

Solution: I installed Debian 5.0 and it works flawlessly... Yes,
flawlessly... first time... every time.  Not messing with Ubuntu
anymore.  Maybe I'll try it after the next upgrade... once I'm sure the
loading program problem has been fixed.
