I have some new information.
1. I am typically running the server version 2.6.31-20-server because for me
there is slight difference in the performance of games and in this case:
1.a the failure occurs with a Sony LCD TV when connected via HDMI with
HDMI Control feature enabled or not
1.b the failure DOES NOT occur with an NEC monitor connected via SVGA
1.c with the abreviated xorg.conf the failure occurs with TV and HDMI
2. when I boot into the generic version with original xorg.conf (same kernel
version otherwise) the problem goes away
I had totally missed that I last ran into the problem when I installed the
server
version. I hosed up my raid and re-installed and forgot to put the server
version back until recently,
