This is the first good news I've heard on this topic in many moons!

I'm running Intrepid 8.10, with local kernel mods (PAPI) that I don't want to 
mess with
at present, so upgrading the kernel at this juncture is not something I want to 
do,
at least in the near-term.

If someone can give me some assurance that:

1. The new fglrx driver is likely to work with 8.10, and

2. The crash is likely due to the old fglrx driver, rather than to the
linux kernel.

then, I'll give the new fglrx code a try.

Otherwise, it'll have to wait until I finish my current project and
benchmarks...

Or, if someone can assure me that the kernel/X upgrades are a definite
prerequisite for the fix, then I'll at least know where I'm at with this.
