Chase, I hope you can have a look at this issue as you did with bug
505474. The Toshiba U500 series is quite popular and the bug renders the
touchpad nearly unusable. The problem is that without having it
recognized as a touchpad, one cannot set the turn-off feature when
typing (e.g. via gsynaptics).

Additional information: in random periods (several times per day - once per 
week), the mousepointer wanders around randomly. Only a 
modprobe -r psmouse ; modprobe psmouse

solves the problem in most cases.
