Update: I found the trick for changing brightness on this machine (sigh, let's chalk it up to user error and leave it at that). This means that as of today's updates, https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/432230/comments/7 is the correct summary: Suspend works, except for the "via dbus whilst on AC", resume works, brightness can be restored to proper levels.
The original problem hasn't recurred for months. Everything else seems fine, so we can: 1) Close this report, and open a new one to track the brightness/dimness problem, 2) Close this report, and ignore the brightness/dimness problem, or 3) Leave this open to track the brightness/dimness problem. I'm sort of tempted by #2 (less work), though #1 would be more complete.
