After logging in (without the gconftool workaround in your .bashrc),
please copy&paste the output of
gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd
echo $GDM_KEYBOARD_LAYOUT
grep ^X /etc/default/console-setup
xprop -root|grep XKB
Then please do
killall gnome-settings-daemon
gnome-settings-daemon--debug --no-daemon 2>&1 | tee /tmp/gsd.log
Wait some seconds until the output has settled down, press Control-C,
and attach /tmp/gsd.log here.
Then press Alt+F2 and run gnome-settings-daemon to restore your
theme/settings/etc.
Thanks!
