The 2.11.x codebase has been quite good (i.e., reasonably crash-free),
so I think the bleeding-edge distros should ship it. (LTS is not
bleeding edge, of course.)

I'm not that happy with the import dialog either. I would like the
destination settings to be in the main import dialog. However, the main
developer, Paolo, doesn't share that view. (You can offer your views on
the gthumb mailing list.) The good news is that gThumb still does not
"own" your photos like f-spot.

The import dialog does have an "event" field. This can be used with the
custom folder option to automatically create a destination folder with
that name (or a combination of the name and date, like
"/home/bill/2010-01-01_wedding"). It is not properly documented at the
moment.
