I maintain an extended version of this script at https://launchpad.net /audio-convert. The original author seems to have vanished.
If you would test that version as well and let me know (file a bug report there) I would be grateful. Also if you have any idea how to package the new script so that bug fixes can be fed into the repository I'd love to know.
