Removing the applet from the panel, and then adding again did not solve the problem.
When trying:- sudo apt-get remove indicator-session The response was that the package did not exist, so then trying:- sudo apt-get install indicator-session and then adding indicator applet session to the panel has resolved the issue. This would imply that the applet was removed during the last upgrade.
