I have tried the suggestion above and I still have the problem. I am running a
Dell Latitude D830. When I select 'connect to hidden wireless network' the
scan appears to finish but it never prompts me to enter the password. It is
just greyed out. Here are a few outputs:
laptop:~$ iwevent
Waiting for Wireless Events from interfaces...
11:00:30.497599 wlan0 Scan request completed
11:01:30.438704 wlan0 Scan request completed

laptop:~$ tail -f /var/log/syslog

Mar 26 10:45:00 jatheis-laptop wpa_supplicant[1291]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS
Mar 26 10:45:40 jatheis-laptop wpa_supplicant[1291]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS
Mar 26 10:46:30 jatheis-laptop wpa_supplicant[1291]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS
Mar 26 10:47:30 jatheis-laptop wpa_supplicant[1291]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS

It does seem to be isolated on a non-broadcasting wireless networks.
How can I turn up debugging to gather more information?
