After an update:

It does not crash back to the gdm login screen any more.
A more minor problem remains. When using nxclient, it is not possible to switch
applications.
I.e. I cannot switch between the nxclient window and any other window. I.e.
switch from the nxclient remote session and a local session of firefox. One has
to exit nxclient before one can do other tasks.
Normally, I would expect the nxclient window to just be another application
window with one being able to minimise nxclient and use firefox instead.
