hmmm... well i'm not sure what 'value' it is but moving the slider around 
(either using the volume control or alsamixer through terminal) doesn't seem 
to do anything.

Not sure if it's relevant, but there seems to be a 'realtek" product 
involved here (it's given as an option in the sound preferences)
Reading around in the alsa site they say there's no support for it. 
(Possibly works in OSS though I've not had any luck using the settings there 
either).

Will install XP on second drive to make sure it all works (and it's not 
actually damaged somewhere).
Otherwise, will just purchase new sound card.
