Hi Brian Actually OO did work for me later on another project with smaller files that didn't have large embedded graphics. I just used ODT format files which are fine when small.
However, the experience did cause me to investigate the Mac further; I had hoped to get off commercial software completely, but I will be doing long books with graphics and it seemed OO wasn't ready for this. (I can't recall exactly where now, but I found specific bugs about graphics slowing down saves in OO 3.x in the OO bug reports). So I'm back to Mac, and using Nisus Writer Pro which has a smoother and simpler interface than OO (or Word), and is doing fine so far. I haven't tested it on huge files though; but I've read elsewhere that it can handle it. I'm still running OO on the Mac also (as NeoOffice), and will have it as a backup. Nisus also supports both ODT and RTF, so I can move files back and forth between them when I need to. Good luck with OO!
