For me, it works since a few days: first when plymouth was used fully, but 
currently also with plymouth using the text plugin (although I have the 
framebuffer activated after booting?!)
It happened already that I could not type in the password at the text and/or 
graphical prompt, but a reboot "fixed" it then.
This looks like there might be timing issues involved.
plymouth 0.8.0~-17 and linux 2.6.32-17-generic.
