Sorry, but I gave up on Linux. As much as I detest Microsoft, everything works on my new HP Pavilion laptop running Windows 7. Sent on the TELUS Mobility network with BlackBerry

ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report. apport-collect -p alsa-base 313431 Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs- upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Hi. I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 with kernel 2.6.27-9-generic on a Dell Latitiude D600. Internal sound has never been a problem with this machine. Everything works as it should including killing the speakers when the headphones are plugged in. Ubuntu however doesn't like to play nicely with my external USB sound card. Or at least it doesn't seem to know how to handle the card properly It's a Creative Technologies 24Bit card housed in a Toshiba Multimedia Center. I can select the card manually in Sound preferences, but the card will only play back in mono and the SPDIF output contains no audio even though my receiver says that it's getting a 96Khz signal and the 'COAX' indicator is lit. I've been through every possible setting under 'Sound' and under the volume control preferences. Under sound preferences the device is recognized as 'Creative Technology TOSHIBA audio device USB Audio' and under volume control preferences it is recognized as 'TOSHIBA audio device' And when the 'TOSHIBA Audio Device' is selected the only controls present are a mono PCM volume slider. Under preferences the only options are PCM and PCM capture. I hope the following helps: bob...@bobbies-thang:~$ lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 8.10 Release: 8.10 bob...@bobbies-thang:~$ bob...@bobbies-thang:~$ lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82855PM Processor to I/O Controller (rev 03) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82855PM Processor to AGP Controller (rev 03) 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 01) 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 01) 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 01) 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-M) USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 01) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 Mobile PCI Bridge (rev 81) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801DBM (ICH4-M) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 01) 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801DBM (ICH4-M) IDE Controller (rev 01) 00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV250 [Mobility FireGL 9000] (rev 02) 02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5705M Gigabit Ethernet (rev 01) 02:01.0 CardBus bridge: O2 Micro, Inc.
