** Description changed: Summary: ======== I cannot get my HP F-4580 multifunction device to scan. I'm using the Lucid Lynx Beta. The device is plugged in via USB. I've dist-upgraded last this morning (~09:00 AM GMT). Articles Read =========== I've read these questions on the subject: https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/86575 https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/83790 http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html According to the question above, HPLIP v3.10.2 supports F-4580. The printer side of it is recognised correctly, but for some reason I can't get the scanner side of it to work. Investigation ========== 1. logged in as root and ran hp-check, then installed all the dependencies. In addition, I had to install python-qt4 to get the GUI to work. However, I still get the following warnings: <shell output> ... Checking for dependency: xsane - Graphical scanner frontend for SANE... warning: NOT FOUND! This is an OPTIONAL/RUNTIME ONLY dependency. Some HPLIP functionality may not function properly. To install this dependency, execute this command: sudo aptitude install --assume-yes xsane ... Current contents of '~/.hplip/hplip.conf' file: error: Could not access file: No such file or directory </shell output> Note that xsane is definitely installed. <shell output> # apt-get install xsane Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done xsane is already the newest version. </shell output> 2. Even though I get these warnings, I can still run hp-setup. It correctly detects all devices including the scanner. If I then run xsane as root (ignoring all the loud warnings about how dangerous it is to run xsane as root), it does recognise the device but when I try to acquire it freezes. If I run hp-setup as non-root (not sure if one is supposed to do that, but tried anyway) no devices are detected. Other (Potentially) Useful Information ============================= 1. nikkkko in this post mentions that the problem can potentially be a lack of a URI for the device. He does not give any steps on how to detect if the URI is set or not. it also appears that his problem is related to accessing the device via wireless? http://ubuntu-ky.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8829789 2. Tried installing the device under Karmic, unsuccessfully. This apparently is expected as the version of HPLIP does not support the device. Any help is greatly appreciated.
