I can confirm this bug on latest Ubuntu Karmic 64 bits (kernel 2.6.31-20). 
This is easily reproductible with sfill command (secure-delete package) :
sfill -fIllv /directory/ (which pretty much does the same thing as the script 
above)

After a few minutes, the system crash (kernel panic).

Here are the ext4 mount option that I use (maybe something is wrong there) :
rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,nobh,nobarrier,data=writeback,commit=120

       Status: Invalid => Incomplete
