In my case any update within 9.10 did not work. The issue was Pulse Audio bug: due to modem driver on the same hw:X device, lirc daemon had hooked itself to the /dev/snd/ device, resulting in pulse audio being unable to load the sound card. This is fixed in Lucid, in the package pulse audio - 1:0.9.22~0.9.21+341-g62bf-0ubuntu1. Details are described here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sl-modem/+bug/449762. As I do not use modem, I have temporary disabled the proprietary modem driver and I am waiting for the official release of 10.4.
