the exact same thing happens to me - i upgraded to lucid yesterday.
plymouth is installed in version 0.8.1-1ubuntu1.
i read somewhere that plymouth not starting might have something to do
with the proprietary nvida driver installed. i will try out the nouveau
driver and see whether this changes anything.
