I figured out my issue: I wasn't using the current kernel. When I updated my kernel I choose to "keep my old menu.lst". This was the source of many problems. I upgraded to Grub2, which automatically grabbed my latest kernel, and my system seems to be working great now. I was using 2.6.24, and now I'm using 2.6.31.
