I experience this exact problem with an Inspiron 6400 too. It does not happen
in all cases, but it is rare when it's working. Happens in three ways:
1. When I plug in the headphone, both the speaker and the headphone are muted
2. When I plug out the the headphone(which worked properly) the speaker is
still muted.(plugging back the headphone works once again)
3. When I plug in headphone jack, both the speaker and the headphone is
working.
