Thanks, there is actually an unofficial 64bit version somewhere on the web (as I found out with some googling). However my point in filing this bug was to point to a problem with Lucid in its current Beta stage. Lightning *should* work in Lucid if a user decides to install it from either Synaptic or the Software Centre. At the moment, the Software Centre on my laptop indicates that Lightning is installed, but Thunderbird remains unchanged.
