Yes, it's still an issue with gnome-panel 1:2.29.92.1-0ubuntu3 in Lucid (and samba 2:3.4.5~dfsg-2ubuntu3).
In my re-test I initially tried (a) connecting to the smb share, (b) suspending the PC, (c) manually disabling the PC's wlan with the kill switch, and (d) restarting: there's no problem if you do it this way.
