At least Debian will release with this patch (don't know about Ubuntu); and the old python-apt API will be dropped after the Debian Squeeze and Ubuntu Lucid releases. And I can't see how this patch can be considered 'intrusive', considering that there was not even a release from this branch yet; and the patch is mostly about renaming function calls, except for the changes in the progress handling which may be considered a bit more intrusive.
