I just tried and the disk array was in a good state. I think my problem before was something else - I seem to remember that there is some place that says what disk to use to write the ram out to - but I had re- arranged my disks and only updated fstab - not this file. I think my problem was that it was writing out the ram to part of the raid array!
My system still didn't come up properly after hibernate but at least the array is ok.
