Just a couple of shots in the dark: ACPI (acpi_listen from acpid package, if that is still around in Lucid will show acpi events, I'm on Jaunty right now and cannot check Lucid). Other possibility is if you have an accelerometer which is being wired up as a joystick or something else. E.g. my Thinkpad has an accelerometer in order to protect the hard drive from falls, and this can also be used to generate input events by tilting the computer (it doesn't work, though). Maybe you have something like this and it's doing something wrong.
