Yes, software RAID in is a non-acceptable state in ubuntu. For servers just as 
well as for workstations.

Beware, if you want to securely save your data and that is probably
mainly why anybody would use redundant disks anyway.

But ubuntu actually started to implement true udev/mdadm hotplugging,
parting from the very stable legacy setup in debian, and left it in this
state, since doing so.

A develeper can go through the documentaion on

easy fixes provided to make up a working system.
