Is this still an issue on Karmic or Lucid Beta?

When i run gnome-sound-recorder in the terminal, this is what i see:

From volume control> recording >capture is always muted, even when i
unmute it, it changes back to mute
automatically....... this is getting me mad.
Im using ubuntu 8.10, i listen to internet audio, i listen to my friends on
skype but they don´t hear me...i have done all i can do for the past 3 weeks
now but to no avail...Any help will look like a million dollar offer to me.
