Sorry to tell you that
- yesterday some partial upgrade reinstalled plymouth
- after that I could not resume boot from the recovery mode anymore
- rebooted in recovery mode, became root, removed plymouth
- rebooted in recovery mode, could resume normal boot
- could get into my desktop with 'startx'

Since that there were updates to Xserver core and ATI/Radeon and that
finished my installation good. I'm sure you read my wailing in other bug
reports.
